South Korea, Peru Secure Defense Vehicle Export Deal
The agreement was signed in Peru on Tuesday, with Peruvian President Jose Jeri and Lee Yong-chul, the head of South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration, in attendance.
As part of the arrangement, defense manufacturer Hyundai Rotem will collaborate with Peru’s Army Weapons and Ammunition Factory to deliver 54 K2 tanks and 141 K808 wheeled armored vehicles by the following year, a statement from the presidential office cited by the news agency indicated.
If the deal is fully executed, it would represent South Korea’s first tank export to Latin America and its most substantial sale of ground weaponry in the region.
President Lee Jae Myung welcomed the signing, expressing his expectation that the agreement will “significantly upgrade the two countries' defense and arms industry cooperation.”
